Jessica Parker Valentine

Lisa Cooley Gallery

34 Orchard LES

until 28 March

As you may know by now, I don’t generally go overboard for abstraction.  However, Jessica’s drawings hold just enough reference to landscape and tangible forms/objects/surfaces for me to give them a thorough visual inspection.  I’m also a fan of her use of MDF as a drawing surface—tactile, dense and hardy,  this material maintains a tangible fragility in the middle-ground between supple paper and sturdy solid wood.  Her drawings are precariously balance against the wall on one corner and held only by a single bent nail which seems to create an odd vertiginous relationship between wall, drawing and viewer.
