Pier 66
4-7 March ‘10
For those of you that missed it, the latest manifestation of Fountain Art Fair sprouted up on the barge that is Pier 66 for four days of anti-Armory Fairness. Sounds like it could be a right-wing militia manifesto, which in this day and age one can’t be too careful about. In this case, it was a mix of 20 galleries and artist projects, live performance and music, and a crowd that evoked the energy of a New York that is often written off as nostalgia. The fact that it was held on a floating pier dangling off Chelsea, the putative capital of cold art world credence and calculation, only lent the affair an enhanced glow of satisfaction.
John Leo and David Kesting of Leo Kesting Gallery founded Fountain for fun, five years ago (I added for fun so there would be five f’s in a row). Greg Haberny/Yum Yum Factory is one of the original repeat offenders.
