Jessica Parker Valentine

Lisa Cooley Gallery

34 Orchard LES

until 28 March

As you may know by now, I don’t generally go overboard for abstraction.  However, Jessica’s drawings hold just enough reference to landscape and tangible forms/objects/surfaces for me to give them a thorough visual inspection.  I’m also a fan of her use of MDF as a drawing surface—tactile, dense and hardy,  this material maintains a tangible fragility in the middle-ground between supple paper and sturdy solid wood.  Her drawings are precariously balance against the wall on one corner and held only by a single bent nail which seems to create an odd vertiginous relationship between wall, drawing and viewer.

Super Friens (sp)

1979

Was organizing my life recently and came across a book of some of my earlier drawings.  I’m not sure what I was trying to do here…  Apparently I drew all of my favourite super heroes and villains and then wanted to make up names for the actors that would play each character.  Seems like an unfinished project to me…  For the record, these images were copyrighted.

Divide and Conquer

Leo Kesting Gallery

until 21 February

Russian cosmonaut.  Bison.  Random?  I don’t know…  Symbols of pioneers, frontiers, etc.  Maybe…  Any way you cut it, these drawings are easy on the eyes…
