Brian Leo
This Air Is Full
812 Washington St.
Until 2 May
This is the last weekend to check out Brian Leo’s latest paintings. The first time I saw his work a few years ago I suspected it might just fall into the “random naive drawing/mindless hipster art” category which was still in its relative infancy (post-Napolean Dynamite). However, there was always something appealing in the work, even when the content was seemingly inscrutible.
After I met Brian and chatted/drank with him I realized that each of his paintings consists of a distinct narrative. Whether founded on personal experiences, random associations, popular anecdotes or topics from the daily news, each painting tells, or at least depicts, a story. As you can see from the installation, there are a lot of stories rolling around in that boys head. So the next time you run into some rambling crazy on the street spouting nonsensical conspiracy stories, buy them some art supplies and see what they come up with.
For the record, I am not implying that Brian Leo is crazy.
